At a moment when ICE threatens to invade our communities, we need to learn how to support one another—and how to stand together to respond to this reign of tyranny. As New Yorkers, I have heard that many of us are keeping the faith and taking courage and hope from the incredible resilience of the Minneapolis community who have banded together to bear witness and support their neighbors against the barbaric police force that has cruelly invaded their city. They continue to stand strong even when the federal government tried to coerce them into turning over their full, unredacted voter rolls as a condition for their departure.
HANDS OFF NYC!
This weekend, many lined up in the cold to prepare to be the next victim of Trump’s autocratic demands. Over 2500 New Yorkers, a majority of them Upper West Siders, signed up to learn how to be a community resistance force like Minneapolis. The HandsOffNYC training was at capacity at nearly 1000 New Yorkers who wanted to learn how to protect their neighbors from ICE on Saturday, January 31st at the Ethical Culture Auditorium.
Local officials showed up to who their support, including Assemblyman Micah Lasher, City Councilmember Gale Brewer, Manhattan Borough President Brad Hoylman-Sigal, and Speaker of the City Council, Julie Menin, with the latter two as featured speakers at the training. It was all truly inspirational, community building and hopeful to hear from them in these anxiety-filled times. Participants learned Know Your Rights, how to participate in ICE watch, and how to organize and mobilize against the unnecessary federal invading forces. We encourage all of our neighbors to participate in these trainings to learn how to resist the authoritarian regime that threatens our basic human rights. In solidarity, Mary Peppito |
